MESSAGE FROM THE CHAPTER CHAIR
John Shepard
Congratulations to all the members of the Greater New York Chapter who made the 2001 MLA annual meeting such a success. Jane Gottlieb and I have received many nice comments from members around the country. MLA's Recording Secretary Lynn Gullickson (Northwestern University) described it as "the best MLA meeting I've ever attended." MLA Newsletter Editor Linda Hartig (Carroll College) said it was "stunning." Deborah Campana (Oberlin College) wrote that "the many perks you provided (breakfast, receptions, CDs, bags, etc.) really made this the most thoughtfully organized event I can ever remember!" You all know (but I must tell you again!) that this could not have happened without your support and your generous donation of time, money, and energy. Thank you!
I also want recognize the hard work of our Local Arrangements Committee: Jane Gottlieb (who as my Co-chair kept assuring me that everything would be alright), Matthew Wise (maps and guides-including that wonderful restaurant guide), J. Rigbie Turner (receptions & banquet entertainment), Christine Hoffman (publicity), Bob Kosovsky (tours), Fran Barulich (conference program and other printing), and Maureen Buja (who took over all registration tasks, including the ones Kimball & Associates had originally contracted with MLA to handle). And let us all recognize the stellar success of our Fundraising Subcommittee (David Farneth, Jane Gottlieb, Brian Hill, Marguerite Iskenderian, Suki Sommer, Gary Thal, and Rigbie Turner) who successfully solicited a record level of donations for the 2001 meeting (in addition to contributing large amounts from their own pockets) and arranged for a wonderful array of discounts from businesses in the tri-state area.
Here are some closing statistics from the 2001 meeting which may interest you. We had a total registration of 668 people (we were counting on 500), including 125 exhibitors and 41 daily registrants. Among these, there were 41 first-time attendees, 15 students, 30 sustaining members of MLA, and 107 session, committee, and roundtable speakers. Perhaps at our Spring meeting we can share our further recollections and impressions of the meeting.
The Spring meeting of the Greater New York Chapter will take place Monday 4 June 2001 in Newark, New Jersey. At 2 p.m. we will gather in the lobby of the New Jersey Center for the Performing Arts. Michelle Reilly of NJPAC will give us a tour of that facility. Following the tour, we will visit the offices of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (just a block and a half away from NJPAC) where we will receive a presentation from the NJSO librarian, Casimer Kossakowski, about the NJSO collection and special projects he has undertaken as part of the NJSO's programs. The afternoon will conclude with a business meeting.
The New Jersey Performing Arts Center is located at One Center Street in Newark. Via public transportation from New York, you may take the PATH train from numerous spots in Manhattan to Penn Station Newark. From Penn Station in Manhattan or points further south in New Jersey, you may take the NJ Transit train to Penn Station in Newark (coming from New York, you will see NJPAC as you approach Newark crossing the Passaic River). You can walk five blocks from Penn Station Newark to NJPAC, or you can take the Loop shuttle ($1.00) which connects Penn Station Newark with Newark's Broad Street Station and stops at NJPAC in between (the Loop shuttle runs every 12 minutes between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays). By car, you may exit from Route 21 (McCarter Highway) to Center Street.
You may wish to consider having dinner after our meeting in the famous Ironbound District of Newark, in the opposite direction from Penn Station than NJPAC (actually, the Loop shuttle can let you off there on your way back). I look forward to seeing you all on Monday 4 June.
